Whatever genre you write in, self-editing is about a whole lot more than tidying up the sentences. But what should you be looking for when you set out to revise and edit your writing to become the best it can be? How do you set about changing things? And how do you give it that extra polish which will raise it above other novels seeking the same readership?
In this one-month online course, hosted by RNA Learning - education arm of the Romantic Novelists’ Association - we will start with ways to get to grips with the plot and structure you have at the moment and think about where it can be developed and strengthened. Then we’ll explore how to bring your characters to more vivid, story-driving life. The crucial issues of storytelling and narrative come next, and finally we’ll tackle the editing process at the page-by-page level.
Each week starts with a presentation on the week’s topic, which you can watch in your own time, and includes one or more exercises, which will be based on your own work-in-progress. There will be forums for participants to share peer-to-peer feedback on each week’s work, and discuss other writing topics and experiences. Every week there will also be a live Zoom Q&A with Emma which will (technology willing) be recorded, where you can raise any questions and problems; Emma will also be available via direct messaging throughout the course.
You should end the course with a stronger sense of how to make your novel the best it can be, plenty of tools for diagnosing problems and solving them, and a clear plan for how to set about the revising process - and perhaps some new writerly friendships as well!
